GTA 6 pre-loading opens on November 12, 2026, for digital pre-orders on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. That’s one week before the game unlocks on November 19. Pre-loading lets you download the game in advance so it’s installed and waiting, and you can start playing as soon as it unlocks. The date is in Rockstar’s pre-order announcement.
Who can pre-load
| How you bought it | Can you pre-load? |
|---|---|
| Digital pre-order, PlayStation Store | Yes, from November 12 |
| Digital pre-order, Microsoft Store | Yes, from November 12 |
| Physical copy (code in the box) | Yes, once you redeem the code; boxes go on sale November 12 |
| Not bought yet | Buy digitally any time before launch, then download |
The physical edition has no disc, which is why Rockstar released it the same day pre-loading opens: the box contains a code you redeem for the digital download.
Pre-loading on PS5
- Make sure the pre-order is on the account you play on.
- Turn on Auto-Download under Settings → Saved Data and Game/App Settings → Automatic Updates, and turn on Stay Connected to the Internet under Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode.
- On or after November 12, the game should start downloading by itself in rest mode. If not, find GTA VI in your Game Library and select Download.
- When it’s done, the game tile shows a countdown or “available on” date until it unlocks.
Pre-loading on Xbox Series X|S
- Make sure the console’s power mode is set to Sleep (previously “Instant-on”) and updates are set to install automatically.
- Once pre-loading opens, the download normally starts by itself. Otherwise go to My games & apps → Full library → Owned games, find GTA VI and select Install.
- Check My games & apps → Manage queue to watch progress.
Check your free space first
Rockstar hasn’t published the download size. Expect a very large install, well over 100 GB by most estimates, and leave headroom for a day-one patch. A base PS5 has about 667 GB of usable space and an Xbox Series S about 364 GB, so clear room before November 12, not on the day.
Does pre-loading mean early access?
No. You can download the game but not play it until it unlocks on November 19. No edition includes early access. What you avoid is the queue: millions of people downloading on launch day.
The day-one patch
Large games almost always get an update at or just before launch. Even if your pre-load finished on November 12, turn on your console a little early on launch day and let it update, so you’re not waiting when it unlocks. For the full launch date and history, see the GTA 6 release date guide.
